Each year, Bayfront Westcott House (BWH) sponsors a participating athlete in the Special Olympics Florida games. This year, BWH donated $1 for every check-in between February 20 and March 31, generating enough to sponsor TWO athletes.

The mission of Special Olympics Florida is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities who wish to participate, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

The ultimate objective of Special Olympics Florida is to help people with intellectual disabilities participate as productive and respected members of society at large, by offering them a fair opportunity to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents through sports training and competition, and by increasing the public's awareness of their capabilities and needs.  Special Olympics Florida does not charge a participation fee to its athletes or their families for participation, as the events are funded through individuals, businesses, and civic groups throughout Florida.

This year’s State Summer Games will be held on May 18 and 19 in Lake Buena Vista. An estimated 1580 athletes are anticipated to compete at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.  Games will include track and field, bocce, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and cycling. Competitors will also enjoy lunch, dinner, closing ceremonies, and a victory dance.  There are events throughout the year; click here to see the schedule!

Registration is open now for volunteers/sports enthusiasts. As a Sports Enthusiast for the 2012 Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games, you will receive one commemorative t-shirt for the event (sizes are not guaranteed) and one snack per shift (snacks are provided at the start of your shift.
